scott: I don't like your solution of relying on service providers to do the right thing when it is not in their interest. This problem should be solved in a standard way, not on an ad hoc case by case basis. We cannot expect companies like FeedBurner to provide solutions that could lead to lost business without explicit rules in place that provide a level field for all those playing in this space. I'd suggest putting the content provider in charge such as by leveraging the Universal Subscription Mechanism (https://rssweblog.com/usm.html).
